Ahead of the launch of Suehiro Club Rin, a members' club for women who love traditional Japanese culture, EDO KAGURA will host Rin — One Night, a special cultural evening limited to 20 women. The evening combines a guided walk through Kagurazaka with an ozashiki: a private banquet with geisha at a traditional ryotei.

Our theme: Begin a new relationship with Japanese culture, at the first breath of spring.

Why Ozashiki Is for Women, Too

"Isn't a geisha banquet something for men?"

​

Many people still think so. For centuries, the world of the ryotei followed the custom of ichigen-san okotowari, "no first-time guests without an introduction", and it was largely the domain of political and business leaders.

 

Yet an ozashiki holds some of the most beautiful expressions of Japanese culture: exquisite kimono, refined movements, dance and music polished through years of rigorous training, and a kaiseki meal that reflects the season.

 

And an ozashiki is not something you simply watch. You share the room with the geisha. You dine, enjoy their performance, talk with them, and play traditional games together.

 

Over the years, we have welcomed many guests from around the world to the ozashiki. Again and again, we have seen women deeply moved by this beauty. So we created a special evening for women only, whether you live in Japan or are visiting, to enjoy the world of the geisha at your own pace.

An Evening That Begins with Hashiri

 

March 13, 2027. Setsubun has passed, and Kagurazaka waits quietly for the cherry blossoms.

 

In Japanese cuisine, hashiri (走り) refers to the first seasonal ingredients to appear, the earliest taste of a season's arrival. Savoring that first sign of change is a distinctly Japanese sensibility.

 

On this evening, you will taste the hashiri of spring in a kaiseki course and begin a new relationship with traditional culture. This gathering is itself the hashiri of a community for people who love culture, and we would like to invite you to be part of its beginning.

First, Understand Kagurazaka

 

Rin — One Night does not begin in the banquet room.

​

We start with a 60-minute walk through Kagurazaka with EDO KAGURA guides.

• Why did a geisha district grow here?

• Who are the geisha, really?

• What kind of culture has the geisha world nurtured?

 

As you follow the history of the neighborhood, you will come to understand the world you are about to enter.

 

"Understanding first makes the experience richer." This is the idea at the heart of everything we do at EDO KAGURA.

 

Only then will you step through the noren curtain of Yukimoto, one of Kagurazaka's long-established ryotei.

 

Your First Ozashiki, Without Worry

 

"I don't know the etiquette."
"What if I do something wrong?"

These are natural concerns for anyone new to the geisha world.

 

That is why every guest will receive an Ozashiki Etiquette Guide before the evening, supervised by the okami (proprietress) of Yukimoto and prepared in your language (English, French, German, or Spanish). It will cover what to wear, why socks are essential, gratuities, how to pour sake for one another, taking photos, and other essentials for first-time guests.

 

This is not a set of difficult rules to memorize. Knowing the basics in advance simply lets you relax and enjoy your time with the geisha. Seating at Yukimoto is at tables with chairs, so there is no need to kneel on tatami.

 

An Authentic Ozashiki at Yukimoto

 

After your walk, we arrive at Yukimoto. Its stone-paved approach is one of the most beautiful and celebrated sights in Kagurazaka.

​

For about two hours, you will spend the evening with three geisha: a kaiseki dinner celebrating the hashiri of spring, drinks, dance, music, conversation, and traditional games.

 

For this evening, we have prepared more than a standard ozashiki:

• Three dances instead of the usual two

• Three ozashiki games instead of two, including one that everyone plays together

 

Not watching culture from a distance, but stepping inside it and enjoying it yourself. That is the geisha world we hope you will discover on Rin — One Night.

 

And in April, Return to Kagurazaka

 

Rin — One Night does not end on March 13.

 

Participants will be invited to Kagurazaka Odori 2027, the geisha dance performance planned for late April. Through the okami of Yukimoto, we plan to reserve centrally located seats with an excellent view of the stage. If you are in Tokyo in late April, you can then watch the same geisha perform on stage.

 

In March, you talk and play with the geisha in the same room, and come to know them as people and the culture they live in. In April, you watch the geisha of Kagurazaka perform on stage.

 

The dance of a geisha you are seeing for the first time, and the dance of a geisha you have talked and laughed with, will never look quite the same.

​

Not a one-time "geisha experience", but two visits to Kagurazaka. We hope it will be the beginning of a new relationship with the neighborhood, its geisha, and Japanese culture.
